Abstract:
Objective To investigate the effect of glycine subgingival sandblasting on the treatment of chronic periodontitis in elderly patients with coronary heart disease.
Methods 40 elderly patients with coronary heart disease and chronic periodontitis were divided into the observation group (21 cases) and the control group (19 cases). The observation group was treated with glycine sandblasting method, and the control group was treated with ultrasonic cleaning and polishing. Compared the periodontal clinical indexes [including probing depth(PD), attachment level(AL), bleeding index(BI), and plaque index(PLI)] before and after one month treatment between the two groups, compared the changes of blood pressure and heart rate before and during the treatment between the two groups, visual analogue scale/score (VAS) was used to evaluate the pain and discomfort during treatment. T test was used for comparison between groups and within groups.
Results After treatment, the periodontal clinical indexes (PD, AL, BI, and PLI) of the two groups were significantly improved compared with that before treatment (the observation group: t=38.031, 40.695, 51.522, 65.723, the control group: t=34.481, 34.329, 36.636, 70.677, P<0.01). The increase of blood pressure (systolic/diastolic blood pressure) and heart rate in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (the observation group: t=-16.627, -42.846, -28.629, the control group: t=-28.119, -63.650, -38.593, P<0.01). The VAS of the observation group was significantly lower than that of the control group (t=-2.879, P<0.01).
Conclusion Glycine subgingival sandblasting can not only effectively improve periodontal inflammation, but also reduce the pain and discomfort during treatment, which is very suitable for elderly patients with coronary heart disease complicated with chronic periodontitis.
