Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the clinical efficacy of electrical stimulation biofeedback therapy combined with pelvic floor rehabilitation training in treating pelvic floor dysfunction in elderly women.

Methods

A total of 120 elderly female patients with pelvic floor dysfunction admitted to The Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University from January 2023 to November 2025 were enrolled and divided into an observation group and a control group using a random number table method, with 60 patients in each group. The control group received pelvic floor rehabilitation training, while the observation group received electrical stimulation and biofeedback therapy combined with pelvic floor rehabilitation training. The total effective rate, pelvic floor muscle strength and pelvic floor function, urodynamic parameters, improvement in urinary incontinence symptoms, and the incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. The t-test was used for comparison of quantitative data, and the chi-square test or Fisher's exact test was used for comparison of categorical data.

Results

The total effective rate after treatment in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (χ2=7.212, P < 0.05). After treatment, the voltages of typeⅠand typeⅡpelvic floor muscle fibers, the fatigue degrees of typeⅠ and typeⅡ pelvic floor muscle fibers, maximum urinary flow rate, maximum urethral closure pressure, and abdominal leak point pressure in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (t=4.126, 6.189, 5.347, 4.950, 6.410, 9.526, and 10.251, respectively, P < 0.01); the pelvic floor dysfunction clinical assessment scale score, 1-hour pad test result, and international consultation on incontinence questionnaire-urinary incontinence short form score were significantly lower than those in the control group (t=8.112, 4.134, and 5.311, respectively, P < 0.01). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (χ2=0.617, P > 0.05).

Conclusion

Electrical stimulation biofeedback therapy combined with pelvic floor rehabilitation training for pelvic floor dysfunction in elderly women can effectively enhance pelvic floor muscle strength and pelvic floor function, improve urodynamic parameters, alleviate urinary incontinence symptoms, and has a high safety profile.
