Abstract:

Chronic constipation is a common digestive disease among the elderly, and the recurrence and persistence of constipation symptoms can seriously affect the quality of life of the elderly and even induce other systemic diseases. Emerging evidence has highlighted a close relation between chronic constipation and intestinal flora disorders, and that an imbalance in the composition and diversity of intestinal flora will trigger or exacerbate chronic constipation symptoms. Due to aging and other factors, the intestinal flora of the elderly often has unique characteristics. This article discusses the changes of intestinal flora in elderly patients with chronic constipation, exploring the mechanisms of constipation in the elderly in terms of short-chain fatty acids, colonic transit time, and the brain-gut axis, as well as therapeutic options based on intestinal flora targets, such as probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, non-absorbable antibiotics, and fecal transplants, so as to provide theoretical basis and reference for the clinical treatment of elderly patients with chronic constipation.
