Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the clinical efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy combined with directional drug penetration treatment of traditional Chinese Medicine on diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in elderly patients.

Methods

Seventy-four elderly patients with DPN treated in Shanghai Jiangwan Hospital from May to October 2020 were recruited as research subjects, and were randomly divided into conventional therapy group (n=40) and comprehensive rehabilitation group (n=34). Patients in conventional therapy group were treated with conventional therapy, while those in comprehensive rehabilitation group were treated with hyperbaric oxygen and directional drug penetration treatment of traditional Chinese Medicine in addition. The blood glucose, blood lipid and clinical efficacy of the patients were observed before and after treatment for 4 weeks. T test was used for the comparison between measurement data, and chi-square test was used for the comparison between counting data.

Results

There was no statistical difference in fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, total cholesterol and triglyceride between the two groups before and 4 weeks after treatment (P > 0.05). After 4 weeks of treatment, the clinical symptoms such as numbness, tingling, burning sensation and knife-cutting pain in both groups were improved compared with those before treatment, and the Michigan neuropathy screening instrument score of the comprehensive rehabilitation group was significantly lower than that of the conventional therapy group (t=2.451, P < 0.05). The total effective rate of the comprehensive rehabilitation group was significantly higher than that of the conventional therapy group (χ2=4.010, P < 0.05).

Conclusion

Hyperbaric oxygen combined with directional drug penetration treatment of traditional Chinese Medicine can significantly improve the nervous function of elderly patients with DPN and improve the clinical therapeutic effect.
