Abstract:

Objective

To study the relationship among abnormal glucose metabolism, serum uric acid level and xanthine oxidase.

Methods

150 participants from June 2009 to June 2010 were divided into three groups: the control group(n=50), impaired fasting glucose(IFG) group (n=50) and type 2 diabetes(T2DM) group(n=50). Fasting blood-glucose(FPG), glycosylated hemoglobin (GHbA1c), fasting insulin(FINS), triglyceride(TG), low density lipoprotein(LDL), urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine(Scr), blood uric acid(BUA), glutamic-pyruvic transaminase(ALT), glutamic oxalacetic transaminase(AST), xanthine oxidase(XOD) levels were tested in each participant. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, and followed by LSD test. The correlation between XOD and uric acid level, IRI, FBG was tested by Pearson's relevant analysis. Association of serum uric acid and FBG was analyzed by partial correlation analysis.

Results

There were significant differences in Xanthine Oxidase, LDL-ch, TG,HbA1c, FINS, sCr, BUN, IRI among the three groups (F=53.803, 5.476, 4.957, 42.596,52.477,10.582,20.014,8.883, 13.138, 14.947;P<0.01). The XOD and sCr level of Type 2 diabetes(T2DM) group was significantly higher than that of the control group (t=9.780, 3.680;P<0.01). Compared with control group, LDL, TG, FBG, HbA1c, FINS, UA, BUN, IRI were significantly higher in other groups (t=2.076, 2.988, 9.058, 10.066, 4.588, 5.868, 6.557, 5.366, 3.270, 2.355, 2.993, 3.500, 2.581, 4.993, 3.857, 1.774;P<0.05 or 0.01).Compared with IFG group, XOD, FBG, HbA1c, FINS, sCr, BUN, IRI were significantly higher in T2DM group (t=7.866, 6.065, 6.636, 2.007, 3.621, 2.236, 3.592;P<0.05 or 0.01). There was a positive correlation between XOD and IRI, BUA, IFG(r=0.507, 0.361, 0.268;P<0.01 orP=0.01). In all participants, BUA was positively correlated with FBG(r=0.17,P<0.05).

Conclusion

The increased availability of XOD results in increased uric acid generation, and probably worsen abnormal glucose metabolism.
